Garland's career-night helps Sage down Bard, 87-77
Albany, NY--- The Sage Colleges men's basketball team hosted the Raptors of Bard College on Wednesday evening in the Kahl Center in a Skyline Conference contest. Sage tallied the 87-77 win to improve to 13-11 overall and 10-9 in the Skyline, while Bard drops to 2-21 overall and 2-16 in the league.
Sage's senior forward Lamont Garland (Albany, NY/Colonie) finished with a career-high 20 points to pace Sage on the night after starting the evening as one of two Sage senior honored prior to the contest on Senior Night. Joining Garland, was Derick Faragon (Rotterdam Junction, NY/Schenectady). The pair of first-year seniors for the second year program have made an impact as the team's leading scorer (Faragon, 340 points) and co-captain (Garland).
The Gators held a 39-28 edge at the break as Faragon led the team with nine points and sophomore Ryan Sager (Stuyvesant, NY/Ichabod Crane) had eight points off the bench as Sage shot 57.7% from the floor in the first half (15-26). Bard was led in the first half by senior guard Matt Shubert (West Chester, PA/Bishop Shanahan) as he had 10 points at the break with three assists.
Down the stretch Bard proved they could hang in the contest and chipped away at Sage's 19 point lead (57-38, 14:08) and would pull within six points in the final three plus minutes, 74-68. Bard finished with 11 three-point baskets on 29 attempts for the night and made seven in the second half to keep the game tight.
Shubert led all players in the contest as he finished with 25 points and shot 8-16 from the floor with four three-point baskets. Junior point guard Yonah Greenstein (Rego Park, NY/Heschel) added 15 points with three assists and two steals.
The Gators had five players finish in double-digits as Faragon tallied 15 points and seven rebounds, while junior Dalton Austin-Michaud (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) racked up 13 points with six rebounds. Junior Pat Lanoue (Troy, NY/Hoosic Valley Central) added a 12 points, while Sage finished with 11 points.
Sage returns to action on February 19 travelling to Farmingdale State College for the 2010-2011 Skyline Conference regular-season finale at 3 p.m., while Bard hosts SUNY Old Westbury that same day at 4 p.m.
