Bard spoils Gators' Skyline Opener in tough five-set battle
Albany, NY---- The Sage Colleges men's volleyball team hosted Bard College on Wednesday evening in the Kahl Center. The match was the first Skyline Conference match of the season for both teams, which a year ago both earned a spot in the league's post-season tournament and Bard captured the league championship title. On Wednesday, it was Bard that posted the 3-2 win to improve to 5-6 overall and 1-0 in the Skyline Conference, while Sage drops to 2-5 overall and 0-1 in the conference. The scores for the match were as follows, 25-22, 17-25, 25-23, 20-25, 15-7).
For the Raptors, junior outside hitter Nick Chan (Victor, NY/Victor) racked up 26 kills with six digs and three total blocks. Freshman setter Henry Kasiske (Los Angeles, CA/Windward School) tallied 51 setting assists on 115 attempts, while adding five digs. Junior libero Andrew Cortrite (Los Angeles, CA/Crossroads) added 35 digs to pace his team in a tough-fought match.
For the Gators, freshman opposite Ryan Wilkins (Ballston Lakes, NY/Shenendehowa) had 13 kills with four blocks, while sophomore setter Kyle Ray (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) dished out 39 assists with two aces.
Junior middle hitter Spencer Hilland (Slingerlands, NY/Bethlehem) had 13 kills with four blocks, while sophomore Jake Douty (Rensselaer, NY/Columbia) chipped in with eight kills, three aces and two blocks, while rookie libero Matt Bynon (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills) added nine digs.
Sage returns to action on February 12 hosting a non-conference tri-match with Kean University and Elmira College. Action gets underway on Saturday at 2 p.m., with Sage vs. Kean, followed by Kean vs. Elmira at 4 p.m. The final match at 6 p.m. has Sage hosting Elmira College.
Bard College hosts Brooklyn College on February 12 at 2 p.m.
