Dolphins top Sage to earn No. 2 seed in upcoming Skyline Tournament
Albany, NY---- The Sage Colleges men's volleyball team hosted the College of Mt. St. Vincent on Tuesday evening in a key Skyline Conference match that would determine the No. 2 and No. 3 seed for the 2011 Skyline Conference Championship. The Dolphins collected the 3-1 win and improve to 15-5 overall with an 8-2 record in the league. The Gators drop to 13-10 overall and 6-3 in the conference.
The Dolphins took the first set 26-24 and the Gators evened the action with a 25-23 win in the second set. The Dolphins took a 2-1 lead after taking the third set 25-18. The Dolphins won the decisive set with a 25-16 decision and earned the No. 2 seed by virtue of the win.
The Gators were led by junior Spencer Hilland (Slingerlands, NY/Bethlehem Central) had 13 kills with seven digs. This week's Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week, freshman middle hitter Connor Thompson (Delmar, NY/CBA) racked up 11 kills with four blocks. Sophomore setter Kyle Ray (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) connected for 35 setting assists with four blocks. Rookie libero Matt Bynon (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills) added 15 digs for the Gators, while senior Dustin Farrell (Port Kent, NY/AuSable Valley Central) added three digs. Farrell was honored prior to the match in conjunction with Senior Night and become the young program's first senior in the two-years of Sage men's volleyball.
CMSV's senior outside hitter David Guerrero (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) had 17 kills with 11 digs and an ace, while junior outside hitter Chris Bacchi (Hicksville, NY/Hicksville) added 14 kills with nine digs. Junior middle blocker Joe Ecock (Brooklyn, NY/Xaverian) racked up 12 kills with two aces and seven digs. Senior setter Michael Quinn (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) added 42 setting assists for the Dolphins with eight digs.
age will be back in action on March 23 traveling to Southern Vermont College for a non-conference match with the Mountaineers with first serve set for 7 p.m. The Dolphins will be back in action on March 27 in the 2011 Skyline Conference Semifinals at Bard College facing Sage at 1:30 p.m. with the victor advancing to the title match at 5 p.m.
