Sage volleyball ranked amongst the national statistical leaders; Bynon national digs leader
Albany, NY---- The Sage Colleges men's volleyball team had a strong showing on the courts last week. With the release of the first NCAA Division III Men's Volleyball Statistics for the 2011 season, Sage is among the national leaders in several categories. Additionally, Gator rookie libero Matt Bynon (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills) is the national Division III leader with his 3.74 digs per set average. He has played in 34 sets and has 127 digs on the young season.
Junior Spencer Hilland (Slingerlands, NY/Bethlehem) ranks 11th in the nation with his 3.97 kills per set average. Hilland leads the team with his 135 kills in 34 sets played, while also ranking 14th in blocks nationally as well. He has 35 total blocks, good enough for a 1.03 blocks per set average.
Sophomore setter Kyle Ray (Horseheads, NY/Horseheads) is also among the national leaders as he has 303 setting assists, good enough for an 8.91 per set average which is 16th best in the country. Ray has five kills with a team-leading 12 service aces and 39 digs. In his young career, Ray has already eclipsed the 300 career dig plateau as he has 318 thus far in 116 sets played.
As a team, Sage is also among the national statistical leaders for Division III. Sage ranks 8th with their 2.29 blocks per set average as they have a combined 129 blocks. The Gators sport a team hitting percentage of .190, which is 22nd best. They also rank 23rd with their 9.62 setting assists per set and 25th with 9.24 digs per set. Sage checks in at the No. 28 spot with their 10.24 kills per set average and win percentage (.444).
Earning additional acclaim for Sage was freshman Ryan Wilkins (Ballston Lakes, NY/Shenendehowa) as he was tapped for the Skyline Conference Honor Roll for his play in the previous week. He averaged 2.71 kills and 1.07 blocks per set in 14 sets played with an attack percentage of .369. Overall on the season, he has 85 kills, 29 digs and 26 total blocks.
Sage returns to action on February 19 hosting a Skyline Conference quad match featuring Purchase College, the College of Mt. St. Vincent, and Bard College. Action commences at noon in the Kahl Center.
