Butler's hat trick not enough as Gators falls to CMSV

Riverdale, ----Sage's women's lacrosse team travelled to the College of Mt. Saint Vincent on Saturday for the team's 2011 season opener. The Dolphins tallied the 20-4 victory to spoil the debut of Jackie Luszczek as the Gators' new women's lacrosse coach. CMSV improves to 3-2 overall and 3-0 in the Skyline Conference, while Sage is now 0-1 overall and in the Skyline Conference.
Mount Saint Vincent opened an 8-0 lead over the first 11 minutes of the contest and headed to the intermission with a commanding 16-2 advantage over the Gators. Overall in the first 30 minutes, Mount Saint Vincent outshot Sage 24-2 and secured 20 of the 23 groundballs recorded.
Slowing the pace down in the second half, the Mount scored four of the six tallies after halftime on its way to its third consecutive victory. Senior Kristen LeGeyt (Stony Point, NY) scored three of her five goals in the second period, with Diana Lawless (Rockville Centre, NY) also adding a marker for the Dolphins in the second half.
For the third straight game the Dolphins scored 20 goals and after being held to just eight tallies in the season opener, Mount Saint Vincent has scored at least 17 goals in each game after that. LeGeyt finished the day with an assist to go along with her five tallies and also picked up two groundballs and won a pair of draw controls.
Jessie Mitchell (Suffern, NY) added five points in the win, recording a hat trick and helping on two other goals. She also led the team with six draw controls and five groundballs.
Lawless and Lauren Perla (Holbrook, NY) each scored three times for the Dolphins and Julia Caro (Mamaroneck, NY) and Nicole Flores (Bethpage, NY) each finished the day with two tallies. Perla secured four groundballs for the Dolphins and Flores won four draw controls.
Sage got three goals from junior Ginelle Butler (Malta, NY/Ballston Spa), while senior Liz Donk (Phelps, NY/Midlakes) added one goal. Butler, who was the team's leading scorer a year ago with 17 points, now has 19 goals and four assists on her career. Sophomore Jennifer Poulin (Walton, NY/Walton Central) led the Gators with two groundballs to go along with a draw control.
In goal for Gators, freshman Mary Kate Hayward (Queensbury, NY/Glens Falls) made the start and racked up dive saves on 21 shots faced with 16 goals allowed in 30 minutes of play. Sophomore Courtney Reed (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) played the second half of the match with four saves and only four goals allowed in goal.
Sage returns to action on March 30 hosting Bard College at 4 p.m. in a Skyline Conference contest to be held of the campus of RPI at Renwyck Field.
