Gators remain perfect in Skyline play with 5-4 win over Bard
Sage's women's tennis team extended their unbeaten streak in conference play with their 5-4 win and have now won six straight matches.
Annandale, NY----The Sage Colleges women's tennis team traveled to Bard College for a Skyline Conference match. The Gators would triumph 5-4 to remain perfect in conference action and extend the squad's win streak to six matches along the way. Sage is now 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the Skyline Conference, while Bard drops to 2-2 and 1-2 in the conference.
Leading the way for the Gators was senior Christina Gray (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) as she posted the 6-3, 6-1 win over Bard's Sofia Commito. The victory marks the 17th straight singles win for Gray which dates back to September of 2008. Sage's sophomore Erica Fitzgerald (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) added a win at second singles beating the Raptor's Khana Itkis, 6-2, 7-5. The Gators also collected a win at first doubles and Gray and Fitzgerald were victorious.
For the first time this fall, Sage's sophomore Briana Bixler (Highland, NY/Highland) suffered a defeat. Bard's Chloe Stergides won the first set 7-5 and Bixler was retired with an injury in the second set, marking her first loss in seven outings this fall.
Sage will be represented by Gray and Fitzgerald at the 2009 ITA East Regional Championships at William Smith College, September 25-27, a program first. The pair will compete in the 64-player singles draw as well as the 32-team field of the doubles' competition. The appearance marks a program first for the Gators.
