Newberg tosses a gem as Gators move into Skyline Championship game
Brooklyn, NY--- The Sage Colleges' softball team advanced to the 2012 Skyline Conference Championship game after beating SUNY-Old Westbury, 3-2 in the semifinals on Saturday.
Sage will face Farmingdale State in the championship game on Sunday. The Championship game is set for 11 a.m. on Sunday at NYU-Poly's Floyd Bennett Field (Brooklyn, NY). The 2012 Skyline Conference Champion, which will earn an automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA Division III Championships.

With Saturday's win over the Panthers, Sage improves to 26-13, while riding a six-game win streak.
Collecting the win for Sage was junior pitcher Kelsey Newberg (New Britain, CT/New Britain) as she worked the complete game and fanned seven. She improves to 15-7 on the season, while adding to her pair of active strikeout records at Sage. She has 106 strikeouts this season and 174 on her career with the Gators. Newberg gave up just two hits in the action, a pair of solo home runs in earning the complete game win. She added to her performance in the circle as she also drove in a run with her RBI single in the top of the third that tied the action at 2-2.
Sage jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when junior left fielder Rachel Smith (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) led off with a single to centerfield and moved to second on a sacrifice by Newberg. Rookie Kristen Beikirch (Brockport, NY/Brockport) had an RBI single to spot Sage to a 1-0 lead.
Old Westbury tied the action with a solo home run by Nicole Petrucci (Locust Valley, NY/Locust Valley) in the bottom of the first. One inning later, Jennifer Jean (Levittown, NY/Division Avenue) gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead with her homer, a solo shot for her fourth of the season.
In the top of the third inning, sophomore Chantal Ceragioli (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) reached on an error and moved to third when Smith doubled. Newberg singled to drive in Ceragioli to tie the action at 2-2. Sophomore Hillary Faas (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) had an RBI sacrifice fly to drive in Smith spot the Gators to a 3-2 lead.
For the game, Smith was 2-4 with a pair of runs scored, while Newberg, Faas, and Beikirch all had RBIs for the Gators.
Saturday's game marked the 39th game of the season for Sage, and helps the Gators continue to add to the feat of rewriting the program's 40-year old record book.
OW's pitcher Alyssa Clancy (Remsenburg, NY/Westhampton Beach) took the loss to drop to 15-9 after she yielded two earned two earned runs off seven hits with four strikeouts.
