NYU-Poly spoils Sage's January finale
Albany, NY –The Sage Colleges' women's basketball team hosted the Jays of NYU-Poly on Tuesday night in the Kahl Gym in a Skyline Conference contest. The Jays posted a 60-55 win behind the 27 points from rookie guard Alyssa D'Apice (Carmel, NY/Carmel). NYU-Poly improves to 6-12 overall and 2-6 in the Skyline Conference, while the loss puts the Gators at 7-11 overall and 4-6 in the conference.
NYU-Poly held a 40-28 lead at the break as D'Apice paced the squad with her 19 points after hitting 6-of-8 from the floor with three three-point baskets.
The Gators fought back and pulled within two points, down 54-52 at the 2:35 mark. Sophomore guard Lea McCalin (Schenectady, NY/Mohonasen) had a pair of free throws and sophomore guard Megan Bowman (Saranac, NY/Saranac) hit a jumper to pull Sage within striking distance. Sophomore Catherine Thompson (Spackenhill, NJ/Spackenhill) answered with a lay-up at 1:05 to pull the Jays back up by four points (56-52).
D'Apice would make three of her next free throws and help NYU-Poly hold onto their lead before a late three pointers from Sage's junior guard Erica Houle (Latham, NY/Shaker) put Sage back within two points, down 57-55 at 0:28. Sage fouled NYU-Poly down the stretch and the Jays converted three of their final four free throws to hold on for the win.
Sage's rookie Sara Tironi (Cambridge, NY/Cambridge Central) finished with a career-high 16 points and had a double-double with her 10 rebounds. Sophomore center Amie Jefferson (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) also had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds with three blocked shots.
NYU-Poly's D'Apice finished with a game-best 27 points after shooting 7-13 from the floor and 10-14 from the line. Senior forward Shelby Bruns (Elko, NV/Elko) had a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Jays.
The Gators will be back in action on February 2 when they travel to Mt. St. Mary College for a 1 p.m. Skyline Conference game.
