ALBANY, N.Y. – Russell Sage College Women's Lacrosse had its fourth quarter comeback attempt fall short on Saturday versus Alfred.
Down 12-4 with 14:14 remaining in the Empire 8 Conference opener for both squads, the Gators reeled off four-straight goals to make it a four-goal contest, 12-8, with 7:18 to go. With 5:10 left, the RSC positive momentum appeared to continue, as it seemed that a shot by junior midfielder Gianna Geraci (Averill Park, NY/Averill Park) had found the back of the cage. However, it was deemed to have stayed out and the visiting Saxons went down to score a goal of their own just 46 seconds later.
Geraci, junior midfielder Alexis Crossman (Corinth, NY/Corinth) and attacker Samantha Shafer (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady), a graduate student, each registered hat tricks for the Gators. Geraci recorded five points on three goals and two assists, four draw controls, four groundballs and a caused turnover. Shafer and Crossman each contributed three goals and an assist. Crossman came up with six draw controls, four groundballs and two caused turnovers.
The Saxons (2-2/1-0 E8), which had six players tally multiple points, used an 6-0 run spanning the intermission to gain the large advantage.
RSC (0-3/0-1 E8) continues a stretch of three-consecutive home contests on Saturday against Saint John Fisher, ranked 20th in the most recent IWLCA national poll.
