Sage falls in five-set marathon match to Alfred, 3-2

Alfred, NY—Sage's women's volleyball team wrapped up Empire 8 action on Saturday taking on Alfred University on the road. In a hard-fought battle, Alfred emerged the winner, 3-2 after Sage opened the match with a 25-15 win the first set. Alfred took set two, 29-27 and the third set, 25-13, while the Gators tied the match winning the fourth set 25-17 and forced a fifth set. The Saxons won the decisive match with a 15-13 win to improve to 8-18 overall and 2-5 in the league. Sage is now 4-22 overall and went 1-6 in the league this season.

Sophomore tri-captain Emma Parkington (Dalton, MA/Wahconah Regional) had a team-best 16.0 points in the match after racking up 15 kills with 11 digs and added an ace. She had a .938 receiving percentage with just one receiving error in 15 attempts.

Graduate performer Miranda Nethaway (Fonda, NY/Fonda Fultonville) added 11.0 points with nine kills and four block assists in the match. Senior Megan Ryder (Broadalbin, NY/Broadalbin Perth) also finished with nine kills with 1 team-best 19 digs. She racked up 9.0 points and had an .829 receiving percentage on 29 attempts.

Sophomore Francesca Gigliotti (Dalton, MA/Wahconah Regional) added 20 setting attempts with 15 digs and an ace, while freshman defensive specialist Elaina Moisidis (Albany, NY/Albany) had 11 digs and was a perfect 10-0 on receiving attempts. Junior Ashley Hintz (Kingston, NY/Kingston) added 15 digs, three aces and added a .950 receiving percentage with just one receiving error on 19 attempts. Junior Brooke Monty (Copake, NY/Taconic Hills) contributed eight digs, while senior Gabby Rowell (Morrisonville, NY/Beekmantown) added seven kills, two digs and four block assists. Junior Renee Martin (Troy, NY/Troy) picked up six kills and seven setting assists with a block assist for the Gators.

For the Gators, Nethaway now has 519 and is ranked 15th on the career kills list. She also boasts 225 total blocks which is fifth. She has also picked up 671.5 career points in her time at Sage. Ryder now has 779 career digs with 59 aces, while Rowell has 420 career kills which is 21st best at Sage.  

Sage is back in action on the road at Mt. Holyoke College for a tri-match with Babson College on November 2 with matches at 1 and 3 p.m. next Saturday.
