Gators Use Three-Pointers to Chalk Up Home Victory

The Gators (2-1), which shot 49.2 percent from the field, including 46.4 (13-of-28) from three-point range, had four players score in double figures in the non-conference victory.
Freshman guard Miranda Price (Stillwater, NY/Stillwater) led all players with 19 points on 7-of-9 shooting. The rookie went 4-of-5 from beyond the arc in her collegiate debut.
Sophomore guard Jaileen Soto (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) added 14 points on 6-of-12 shooting, while guard Kyla Smith (Sprakers, NY/Fonda-Fultonville/Fredonia), a graduate student, and junior forward Kallie Hopkins (Millsboro, DE/Poly Tech) registered 12 points each. Smith dished out six assists, while Hopkins secured nine rebounds.
Senior guard Layla Acosta (Haines City, FL/Haines City), announced as the Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week on Monday, contributed nine points on 4-of-8 shooting, eight rebounds and five assists.
SUNY Morrisville (0-2), which turned 28 RSC miscues into 25 points, also had a quartet of players net twin figures. Freshman guard Gianna Washington topped the Mustangs with 18 points, all of which occurred in the first half.
The first half was high-scoring with both squads knocking down eight three-pointers each to head into the locker room knotted at 42. The Mustangs used a 30-20 stretch spanning to quarter break to hold a 12-point advantage with 5:00 left in the second quarter. RSC answered with a stanza-closing 12-0 run to tie it.
The Gators commenced the third quarter on a 10-2 run, helping the hosts go into the final period up by 10, 62-52. SUNY Morrisville trimmed its deficit to four twice in the fourth quarter, including with 3:25 to go. From there, a Hopkins layup followed by a Price three-point play gave RSC back its breathing room.
RSC, now 2-0 at home, is back on the court on Tuesday at the University of Saint Joseph.
