RSC Upended in Season Opener
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Russell Sage College received five or more kills from four different players in Friday's season opener.
PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Russell Sage College commenced its campaign by falling 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 22-25, 20-25) to Saint Lawrence this evening at the SUNY Plattsburgh Tournament.
The Gators received five or more kills from four different players in the non-conference setback.
Senior outside hitter Ashleigh Gerkman (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) paced RSC with 12 kills on .371 hitting.
Junior setter Cassidy Weiher (Aurora, CO/Cherokee Trail/Southern Maine) added nine kills and 11 assists, while freshman libero Emma Curry (Goodyear, AZ/Estrella Foothills) contributed 13 digs, four aces, and four assists.
Senior setter Mia Wood (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) led RSC with 19 assists.
After splitting the first two sets, Saint Lawrence hit .387 as a team across the next two frames to secure the close victory.
Junior outside hitter Araiza Acum-Santos led all players with 18 kills on .406 hitting. Senior outside hitter Berit Brecke tossed in 10 kills on .400 hitting and five total blocks for the Saints (1-0).
RSC (0-1) faces SUNY Potsdam and the host Cardinals tomorrow.
Gator Bites with Papa John's: RSC made its first appearance in the Empire 8 Conference Championship Tournament last fall…Seven players return this season, including: senior middle hitter Aniyah Kelley (Newcastle, DE/William Penn) and Gerkman…Head Coach Rosilyn Cummings, now in her third season at the helm of the Gators, added nine newcomers to this year's squad.
