Senior outside hitter Ashleigh Gerkman (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) keyed the home triumph, topping all participants with 13 kills on .360 hitting. She had six kills in the first set to help RSC get a 25-21 win. After the Gators forced the visitors into a negative hitting performance to secure the second frame by the same score, RSC got out to leads of 16-5 and 21-9 to complete the sweep by a score of 25-12.
Sophomore outside hitter Mia Merino (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook) added seven kills on .375 hitting, while freshman middle hitter Julia Morales (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) tallied six kills on .364 hitting.
RSC served up 15 aces on Saturday. Senior setter Mia Wood (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) registered six of those, to go along with 15 assists.(A
Sophomore outside hitter Kassity Cruz paced SUNY Poly (6-10/0-3 E8) with nine kills on .227 hitting.
Looking ahead, RSC (7-7/2-1 E8) hosts Nazareth on Friday.
Gator Bites with Papa John's: RSC made its first appearance in the Empire 8 Conference Championship Tournament last fall…Seven players return this season, including: senior middle hitter Aniyah Kelley (Newcastle, DE/William Penn) and Gerkman…Head Coach Rosilyn Cummings, now in her third season at the helm of the Gators, added nine newcomers to this year's squad…Gerkman was selected the Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, August 31.
