Gators Pick Up Victory Over Bethany in Saturday's Crosstown Challenge Action
Russell Sage College Women's Volleyball hosted the second day of the Crosstown Challenge and played a pair of matches against SUNY Oswego and Bethany College.
ALBANY, N.Y. – Russell Sage College Women's Volleyball hosted the second day of the Crosstown Challenge and played a pair of matches against SUNY Oswego and Bethany College.
The Gators (4-5) split the pair on Saturday afternoon, falling 3-0 (20-25, 23-25, 23-25) to SUNY Oswego before wrapping up the tournament with a 3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-23) against Bethany.
In the opener, RSC was led by senior middle hitter Aniyah Kelley (Newcastle, DE/William Penn), who tallied 12 kills with a 0.304 hitting percentage and a trio of block assists.
Senior outside hitter Ashleigh Gerkman (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) provided efficient hitting for Russell Sage as well, compiling seven kills at a 0.385 hitting percentage.
Freshman middle hitter Julia Morales (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) blocked four Laker attacks, while freshman setter Emma Curry (Goodyear, AZ/Estrella Foothills) contributed a game high eleven digs.
Priscilla McReynolds led the way for Oswego (7-2) with 12 kills in the victory.
In game two, RSC flipped the script with a big 3-0 victory over the Bison.
Kelley was in double digits again, tallying ten kills. Sophomore outside hitter Mia Merino (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook) matched that total with ten of her own with a 0.269 hitting percentage.
"The Crosstown Challenge was a bunch of difficult teams that are very well matched with us," shared head coach Rosilyn Cummings on the two-day tournament. "I was very happy with the four-setter with Oneonta, Oswego showed up and did an awesome job of putting the ball away against us - we learned a lot defensively in that match, and we came out against Bethany where we should what we really can do. I'm really happy with it and I'm excited to move onto Cobleskill on Wednesday."
The Gators are back in action on Wednesday as they host SUNY Cobleskill.
