RSC Softball Splits Doubleheader With SUNY Poly on Sunday

ALBANY, N.Y. – Russell Sage College softball opened Empire 8 Conference play on Sunday afternoon and split a doubleheader with the Wildcats of SUNY Poly.
Game one was tight for the majority, the score at a 0-0 stalemate through the first four frames. RSC struck first in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI-groundout by junior Bella Julian (Cicero, NY/Cicero North-Syracuse).
The Wildcats got that one back and more in the top half of the sixth, taking advantage of free passes to plate five runs. The Gators scratched another across in the bottom half, but it was not enough as SUNY Poly came out on top 5-2.
Annabella Putnam (Prattsburgh, NY/Prattsburgh/Mansfield), a graduate student got the nod for RSC, giving up just one earned run and punching out seven.
Game two seemed to be off to a similar start for the Gators, who trailed 4-3 in the sixth inning.
The bats came alive in the bottom half of the sixth, as three doubles combined to produce three runs. Junior Allison Kenyon (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) kicked the frame off with a two-bagger. Junior Bella Julian (Cicero, NY/Cicero North-Syracuse) tied the ballgame with her double, before junior Izabelle Ratcliffe (Cohoes, NY/Shaker/HVCC) drove in two runs to seal the win for RSC.
SUNY Poly (6-6/1-1 E8) got one back in the seventh, but RSC held on to pick up their first Empire 8 Conference victory of the year.Senior Bailey Catlin (Petersburg, NY/Berlin/Saint Rose) tossed a complete game in the victory, allowing just one earned run and striking out three.
"I'm proud of the team for showing some fight in game two," shared head coach Stephanie McKay after their first conference win. "Our team knows what it takes to compete in our conference and we're excited to bring what we learned today into next weekend."
RSC (6-5/1-1 E8) is back in action on Monday as they resume their suspended game against RPI.
Gator Bites with Papa John's: Russell Sage College Softball looks to return to the Empire 8 Conference Championship Tournament for the sixth-straight spring…14 returners combine with seven newcomers to make up this year's roster… Annalise Tyler (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont), Emma Heartquist (Stuyvesant, NY/Ichabod Crane), and senior infielder Hannah Smith (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa/Saint Rose) headline the returnees…Tyler and Smith both earned All-E8 honors last season…Tyler was named to the second-team while Smith earned a spot on the third team… Pitcher Annabella Putnam (Prattsburgh, NY/Prattsburgh/Mansfield), a graduate student and junior catcher/infielder Katie Call (Antwerp, NY/Indian River/Jefferson County CC) highlight the newcomers…Tyler took home E8 Player of the Week honors for the period ending Sunday, March 15…The infielder slashed .462/.654/.533 during the team's season-opening trip to Florida…The junior scored eight runs, tallied four RBI, laced three doubles, and totaled 17 bases…She registered four multi-hit efforts and stole four bases across the eight games.
