ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Russell Sage College softball wrapped up its weekend in Rochester splitting a doubleheader with Nazareth.
RSC fell in game one 8-0, before salvaging the split with a 5-4 victory in the nightcap.
Five different Gators registered hits in the opener, all of which were singles. Annabella Putnam (Prattsburgh, NY/Prattsburgh/Mansfield), a graduate student, punched out four Golden Flyers in the effort.
Game two started off in a similar fashion, as Naz held a 3-0 lead through five innings. RSC put up a four spot in the top of the sixth, giving themselves a lead they would not relinquish.
The game-winning inning was headlined by a two-run single by sophomore Carmela DeMaio (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick), that gave RSC a 4-2 lead.
The Gators got a much-needed insurance run in the top of the seventh as senior Emma Heartquist (Stuyvesant, NY/Ichabod Crane) ripped a double to bring home junior Emily O'Keefe (Albany, NY/Albany).
The Golden Flyers scratched one run across in the bottom half of the last inning, but the comeback attempt came up short and RSC picked up its second Empire 8 Conference Victory of the season.
Senior Bailey Catlin (Petersburg, NY/Berlin/Saint Rose) continued her strong campaign, picking up her fourth win on the season with a trio of punchouts.
Heartquist led all Gator hitters with four hits on the afternoon, surpassing the 100 hit mark for her RSC career.
Juniors Annalise Tyler (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont) and Izabelle Ratcliffe (Cohoes, NY/Shaker/HVCC) each added a pair of knocks.
"I'm proud of the way the team battled back after a tough loss and dug in to close it out," shared Head Coach Stephanie McKay. "We're excited to bring this energy into the week ahead."
Looking ahead, RSC (9-9/2-4 E8) battles with SUNY New Paltz next Saturday in a doubleheader.
