Gators Split Home Doubleheader with Defending E8 Champs

The Gators erased a 2-0 deficit to take the opener 5-2.
After the Saxons plated a pair of first-inning runs, RSC knotted the contest in the fourth.
Junior designated player Annalise Tyler (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont) drove in both runs with a two-out single.
RSC took the lead for good with a three-run bottom of the sixth.
With two outs, senior infielder Ciana Santana (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) doubled home a pair. Junior infielder/outfielder Allison Kenyon (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) followed with a double to plate Santana.
A day after no-hitting visiting Houghton, RSC right-hander Annabella Putnam (Prattsburgh, NY/Prattsburgh/Mansfield) tossed another complete game to get the win (5-4, 1 save). The graduate student, named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Players and Pitchers to Watch List, permitted just three hits, all of which came in the first inning, and struck out seven.
Alfred (12-10/6-4 E8) got out to leads of 5-0 and 10-1 to salvage the split with a 14-4 victory
Junior Molly Whitmyer keyed the Saxons offense, blasting two home runs and tallying five RBI.
Sophomore infielder Jade Maille (South Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) and senior catcher/outfielder Emma Heartquist (Stuyvesant, NY/Ichabod Crane) each went 2-for-4 for RSC in the nightcap. Maille scored two runs, while Heartquist recorded an RBI and a run scored.
Looking ahead, RSC (12-12/5-5 E8) is slated to play an E8 doubleheader at Utica on Tuesday afternoon.
Gator Bites with Papa John's: Russell Sage College Softball looks to return to the Empire 8 Conference Championship Tournament for the sixth-straight spring…14 returners combine with seven newcomers to make up this year's roster…Heartquist, Tyler, and senior infielder Hannah Smith (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa/Saint Rose) headline the returnees…Putnam and junior catcher/infielder Katie Call (Antwerp, NY/Indian River/Jefferson County CC) highlight the newcomers…Tyler and Smith both earned all-Empire 8 Conference honors last season…Tyler was named to the second team while Smith represented the Gators on the third team…Tyler took home E8 Player of the Week honors for the period ending Sunday, March 15…The infielder slashed .462/.654/.533 during the team's season-opening trip to Florida…The junior scored eight runs, tallied four RBI, laced three doubles, and totaled 17 bases…She registered four multi-hit efforts and stole four bases across the eight games…Putnam was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Players and Pitchers to Watch List…The righty, just one of 118 players from across the country to make the prestigious list, helped the RSC pitching staff close the Easter weekend leading the E8 with 114 strikeouts…At the time, the Gators ranked second in the Conference with a 3.25 Team ERA…Opponents were batting just .178 off the graduate student, the worst off of any E8 hurler…Putnam commenced this week ranked third on the circuit with 50 strikeouts and sixth with a 3.26 ERA…She no-hit visiting Houghton in the first game of Friday's doubleheader...Senior pitcher Bailey Catlin (Petersburg, NY/Berlin/Saint Rose) stood out in the circle in the early going…The right-hander started the week ranked second in the E8 with a 2.08 ERA and four victories…She was tied for third in the Conference with seven games started and five complete games…Heartquist entered Wednesday's doubleheader at SUNY New Paltz ranked eighth in the E8 with a .447 batting average…At the time, Tyler was tied for seventh in the Conference with 15 runs scored and tenth with 23 hits...In the first game of the home doubleheader vs. Hougthon on April 10, Putnam tossed a no-hitter...She allowed just one walk and fanned six in the 9-0 victory...Heartquist went 8-for-19 with three runs scored and three RBI this week...The senior totaled 10 bases, slugged .526 and reached base at a 45.0 percent rate, across the six games...Putnam went 2-1 across her three starts this week, all complete games...The righty registered 15 strikeouts across 18.0 innings and a 2.33 ERA...Opponents hit just .232 against her this week.
