RSC Softball Clinches Sixth-Straight E8 Tournament Berth

GENESEO, N.Y. – Host SUNY Geneseo capitalized upon a Russell Sage College error to sweep Monday's Empire 8 Conference Softball doubleheader in walk-off fashion.

SUNY Geneseo (26-9/17-3 E8), now on a nine-game winning streak, took the opener 6-2 and won the nightcap 7-6 in eight innings.

Despite the setbacks, based upon results around the Conference, RSC secured a spot in the E8 Championship Tournament for the sixth-straight year.

The Knights, which moved to 12-0 at home, led 5-0 after two innings to take the opener.

Junior Annalise Tyler (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont) went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI double to pace RSC. The designated player went 4-for-9 with a run scored and an RBI across the twin bill.

In the second game, the Gators (16-18/9-9 E8) overcame an early 3-0 deficit to take a 6-4 lead through five and a half innings. RSC rallied for four runs in the fifth to turn the tide.

Junior outfielder Bella Julian (Cicero, NY/Cicero North-Syracuse) had the big hit of the rally, plating a pair with a two-out single..

The Knights knotted the contest in the bottom of the seventh via a wild pitch, before scoring the winning run via an RSC miscue in the eighth. Both of the tallies were unearned.

Looking ahead, the Gators are slated to play an E8 doubleheader tomorrow afternoon at Utica.

Gator Bites with Papa John’s: Based upon results around the Conference this weekend, Russell Sage College Softball secured its spot in the Empire 8 Conference Championship Tournament...The Gators have made the postseason for the sixth-straight spring…14 returners combine with seven newcomers to make up this year's roster…Tyler, senior catcher/outfielder Emma Heartquist (Stuyvesant, NY/Ichabod Crane), and senior infielder Hannah Smith (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa/Saint Rose) headline the returnees…Junior catcher/infielder Katie Call (Antwerp, NY/Indian River/Jefferson County CC) and pitcher Annabella Putnam (Prattsburgh, NY/Prattsburgh/Mansfield), a graduate student, high light the newcomers…Tyler and Smith both earned all-Empire 8 Conference honors last season…Tyler was named to the second team while Smith represented the Gators on the third team…Tyler took home E8 Player of the Week honors for the period ending Sunday, March 15…The infielder slashed .462/.654/.533 during the team's season-opening trip to Florida…The junior scored eight runs, tallied four RBI, laced three doubles, and totaled 17 bases…She registered four multi-hit efforts and stole four bases across the eight games…Putnam was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Players and Pitchers to Watch List…The righty, just one of 118 players from across the country to make the prestigious list, was tabbed the E8 Pitcher of the Week for the period ending Sunday, April 12…The graduate student, who no-hit visiting Houghton on April 10, went 2-0 with a 1.75 ERA and 13 strikeouts in her two Conference starts that weekend…Overall, she went 2-1 across her three starts this week, all complete games…The righty registered 15 strikeouts across 18.0 innings, a 2.33 ERA, and a .232 opposing batting average…Opponents began the day batting just .203 off the graduate student, the worst off of any E8 hurler…Putnam began the contests ranked third on the circuit with 85 strikeouts and fifth with a 3.04 ERA…Senior pitcher Bailey Catlin (Petersburg, NY/Berlin/Saint Rose) topped the Conference with a 2.59 ERA.
