Putnam Twirls No-Hitter as Gators Sweep Highlanders in Friday Afternoon Doubleheader

ALBANY, N.Y. – Russell Sage College softball defeated Houghton twice on Saturday in an Empire 8 Conference doubleheader, winning game one 9-0 before coming out on top 7-0 in game two.
The Gators ended game one early, enforcing the run-rule after the top of the fifth with a 9-0 victory over the visiting Highlanders.
Annabella Putnam (Prattsburgh, NY/Prattsburgh/Mansfield) shined in game one, tossing a no-hitter in the five-inning victory. The graduate student recorded six strikeouts and only surrendered one walk.
Offensively, junior infielder Annalise Tyler (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont) had a pair of hits and a RBI. Junior Katie Call (Antwerp, NY/Indian River/Jefferson County CC) scored a pair of runs and hit a double .
Senior Ciana Santana (East Meadow, NY/East Meadow) drove in two runs on a single, while senior Emma Heartquist (Stuyvesant, NY/Ichabod Crane) brought home a run with a triple.
In game two, Bailey Catlin (Petersburg, NY/Berlin/Saint Rose) got the start, and nearly matched Putnam surrendering just two hits as she tossed a complete game shutout. The senior struck out four Highlanders and only allowed two hits and surrendered one walk.
Four different Gators had pairs of hits in the nightcap victory. Junior Bella Julian (Cicero, NY/Cicero North-Syracuse), sophomore Carmela DeMaio (East Brunswick, NJ/East Brunswick), junior Izabelle Ratcliffe (Cohoes, NY/Shaker/HVCC), and Heartquist all had multiple knocks.
Six hitters drove in a run in the win. Across the two contests, Gator batters combined for 18 hits and eleven runs batted in.
"I'm proud of our pitchers for staying locked in for the entire duration of both games," shared Head Coach Stephanie McKay. "Our offense being able to produce behind them was huge for the team going into day two of the weekend!"
RSC is back in action on Saturday as they host Alfred for a doubleheader.
