TROY, N.Y. – Russell Sage College baseball kicked off their season on Saturday as they hosted the Dolphins of UMSV.
The Gators (1-0) used strong pitching to pick up the opening day victory, coming out on top 2-0.
Senior Evan Grimes (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) got the nod from Head Coach Matt Marsh in his first game at the helm of the Gators, and punched out eleven Dolphins across 5.2 innings of shutout ball.
Senior Greg Mays (Troy, NY/Tamarac/SUNY Cortland) took over in the sixth inning and went the rest of the way, holding Mount Saint Vincent scoreless and picking up a 3.1 inning save and recording three strikeouts.
Sophomore Darren Dengler (Hobart, NY/South Kortright) got the Gators on the board in the fourth with an RBI groundout and junior Jayden Kennedy (East Patchogue, NY/Patchogue Medford/HVCC) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to extend the RSC lead to two.
Senior Joe Karpierz (Latham, NY/Shaker/Xavier) was the lone Gator with multiple hits, hitting a single and a double in the victory.
"Baseball is about consistency, and Evan Grimes and Greg Mays showed that today. They and the defense showed incredible poise today," shared Marsh. "I am really proud of Colin Casey's work behind the plate. There is some growth to be had offensively but I know we are going to get there. There was some really good situational hitting and baserunning when we needed it. We're excited to get back at it but it was a good first day."
RSC has one more week of practice before traveling to Florida, kicking off their trip with a doubleheader against Thomas and RIT on Sunday.
