MEDFORD, MASS. – Russell Sage College Baseball kicked off a weekend in Massachusetts on Friday with a battle against Tufts, receiving votes in the latest ABCA and D3Baseball.com national polls.
The Jumbos entered the contest with their lone loss to No. 16/17 Trinity (TX) and 6-0 at home. They led 4-1 heading through seven frames, before RSC exploded for eight runs in the top half of the eighth inning, propelling them to a 10-4 victory.
12 batters came to the plate in the game-winning inning, and six registered hits. Seniors Collin Casey (Marlboro, NY/Marlboro/Saint Rose) and Anthony Rizzo (Latham, NY/Shaker/HVCC) each tallied a pair of knocks in the outburst.
The biggest swing of the inning came off the bat of Casey who's double down the left field line cleared the bases and made the score 9-4. Sophomore Darren Dengler (Hobart, NY/South Kortright) drove in a pair with a double in the eighth, and senior Joseph Karpierz (Latham, NY/Shaker/Xavier) knocked in a pair on a single.
Every batter in RSC's lineup in the victory found themselves in the hit column. Senior Evan Grimes (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) and junior Connor Griffin (Jersey Shore, PA/Jersey Shore/Lock Haven) each had two hits on the afternoon, and both came around to score in the 8th inning off after reaching base on free passes.
Grimes got the start on the mound for Coach Marsh's squad, punching out five batters across five innings of work. The pitching victory went to senior pitcher Greg Mays (Troy, NY/Tamarac/SUNY Cortland), who allowed just one run across the final four innings of the contest to secure the victory against the highly-touted Jumbos (8-2).
