DAVENPORT, Fla. – Russell Sage College baseball continued their spring break trip in Florida on Thursday as they defeated the University of Southern Maine 14-11 in eleven innings.
The Gators (4-2) held an 8-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh, where the Huskies put up six runs to bring the RSC lead to one.
After RSC tacked on a few more and led 11-8 heading into the bottom of the ninth, Southern Maine used two big flies to square the game up at eleven.
That score stuck until the eleventh inning, where the Gator offense delivered a three-run inning and picked up the victory on Thursday night.
Senior Joe Karpierz (Latham, NY/Shaker/Xavier) drove in five runs on four hits, while junior Jayden Kennedy (East Patchogue, NY/Patchogue Medford/HVCC) drove in three runs on three hits.
Senior Anthony Rizzo (Latham, NY/Shaker/HVCC) tallied a trio of hits and scored two runs, and freshman Nick Irizarry (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield) scored three runs in his two-hit performance.
Evan Grimes (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) got the nod, punching out ten across 6.1 innings of work, including passing the 100 strikeout mark, becoming just the third Gator to reach that mark. The two-way senior delivered the go-ahead RBI on an eleventh inning single.
Senior Xavier Garcia (San Diego, CA/Saratoga Springs/SUNY Adirondack) picked up the victory, throwing 2.1 innings of scoreless ball in the extra innings thriller.
Kyle Douin and Evan Baschnagel each ripped homeruns for Southern Maine (1-1) in the loss.
RSC is back on the Diamond on Saturday as they play a doubleheader against NYU at IMG Academy.
