ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Russell Sage College baseball completed a three-game sweep of St. John Fisher on Sunday, winning two games in a doubleheader and securing the highest single-season win total in program history.
The Gators (29-5/18-1 E8) won their 28th and 29th games, surpassing the 27 win mark of the 2025 team. RSC won game one 13-3, enacting the run-rule in seven innings, before picking up a 5-2 win to complete the sweep of the Cardinals, who are receiving votes in the ABCA Division III National Poll.
In game one, the Gators bats continued to surge, as every starter got a hit in the 13-run outburst.
Senior Evan Grimes (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) led the way with a trio of knocks and two runs batted in, while four others tallied two hits.
Freshman Nick Irizarry (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield), senior Anthony Rizzo (Latham, NY/Shaker/HVCC), senior Collin Casey (Marlboro, NY/Marlboro/Saint Rose), and sophomore Darren Dengler (Hobart, NY/South Kortright) all had two hits, and combined to drive in five runs.
Irizarry, who leads the conference and is second in all of Division III in stolen bases, swiped another two bags in the opener.
Senior Joseph Karpierz (Latham, NY/Shaker/Xavier) and junior Jayden Kennedy (East Patchogue, NY/Patchogue Medford/HVCC) each drove in a pair of runs with a hit in the record-setting victory.
Senior Aidan Green (Whitesboro, NY/Whitesboro/Onondaga CC) continued his strong campaign on the bump, tallying a seven-inning complete game with seven strikeouts to secure his fifth win of the year.
The nightcap was much lower scoring, as the contest was square at two through seven frames, before RSC scored three in the top of the eighth to give the Gators a 5-3 advantage.
Xavier Garcia (San Diego, CA/Saratoga Springs/SUNY Adirondack) got the nod for game-two, and was great through seven innings. The senior, who surpassed the 100 career strikeout mark earlier this month, struck out nine while just surrendering one walk.
Senior Greg Mays (Troy, NY/Tamarac/SUNY Cortland) secured his fourth save of the season, punching out two Cardinals across two scoreless innings.
Kennedy produced big in game two, tying the game at two with a solo shot in the sixth, and giving the Gators the lead for good with a single in the eighth.
Rizzo had another three hits, while Irizarry had two hits and scored a run.
"In our culture, we don't believe in momentum. It's a culture of showing up every day, every inning, every pitch and being where your feet are," said Head Coach Matt Marsh following the three-game sweep. "Our group showed that today. Both starting pitchers, Green and Garcia, were tremendous and both faced adversity early and showed true toughness competing through it and throwing up several zeros in a row afterward. Our offense continues to score in many ways and create a ton of pressure. Really proud of our group, and looking forward to getting back to work this week and continuing to get better."
The Gators, who now hold a two-game lead in the Empire 8, are back in action on Tuesday to wrap up their non-conference slate against Skidmore. RSC completes its regular season next weekend with a three-game set at Elmira.
