Grimes Joins the MLB Draft League's Williamsport CrossCutters
ALBANY - At the request of multiple MLB organizations, Russell Sage College pitcher/outfielder Evan Grimes (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa/SUNY Adirondack) is heading to Williamsport, Pennsylvania to join the MLB Draft League's Williamsport CrossCutters.
Grimes, chosen a first-team All-American by the American Baseball Coaches Association and D3Baseball.com, was originally slated to pitch for the CrossCutters after the 20-round MLB Draft was held July 11-12. However, the desire of multiple teams to see more of the first RSC student-athlete to earn first-team All-American honors prior to making their picks, expedited the move.
The ABCA Region III Player of the Year helped the Gators (37-8), the Empire 8 Conference Regular Season and Tournament Champions, qualify for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history in 2026.
On the mound, the lefty, voted the Empire 8 Conference Pitcher of the Year, went 7-2 with two saves. He tallied 80 strikeouts, the most in the E8, and a 2.92 ERA across 69.2 innings.
At the plate, the senior, a first-team All-Region choice by both organizations, batted .355 (54-for-152), slugged .671, and reached base at a 48.8 percent clip.
He topped the E8 with 57 RBI, stole 29 bases, and scored 58 runs. Grimes, who tallied seven three-hit performances, finished his season ranked fifth in the NCAA with seven triples. He totaled 102 bases, a program single-season record, blasted seven homers, registered 13 doubles, and drew 38 walks.
Grimes assisted the Gators, which set the program records for wins in a season, in topping the NCAA with 193 stolen bases, 4.29 per-game.
RSC, which came in 12th in NPI, was ranked 30th in the final ABCA National Poll. The Gators, which completed just their fifth season as a program, also won the first NCAA Tournament game for RSC Athletics, a 7-4 home victory vs. Trinity on May 16.
The MLB Draft League is a six-team baseball league featuring a split-season amateur-professional format. The first half of the MLB Draft League season features Draft-eligible players aiming to improve their stock ahead of the annual MLB Draft in July. The League then switches to a professional format in the second half, with paid players comprising the six rosters.
Since its inception in 2021, the MLB Draft League has produced 233 MLB Draft picks and had more than 180 undrafted free agents sign with a Major League organization. Additionally, 15 players from the Professional half of the 2022-25 MLB Draft League season had their contracts purchased by a Major League organization.
