Russell Sage College baseball completed its weekend three-game set with Alfred on Sunday, defeating the Saxons 12-0.
ALBANY, N.Y. – Russell Sage College baseball completed its weekend three-game set with Alfred on Sunday, defeating the Saxons 12-0.
Across the three-game sweep, the Gators stole 20 bags, bringing their season total to 112, marking a new program standard. The previous mark was 102, set by the 2023 team.
RSC is stealing bases at a 90% rate in 2026, and is currently ranked at the top of Division III with 4.48 stolen bases per game.
Sunday's victory was all Gators (22-3/11-0 E8), headlined by a strong pitching performance by Xavier Garcia (San Diego, CA/Saratoga Springs/SUNY Adirondack), who struck out five Saxons across five scoreless innings of work. The senior became just the fourth Gator to surpass the 100 strikeout mark for his career in the victory. The southpaw went 2-0 with a 1.12 ERA and eight strikeouts this week. Opponents hit just .185 off of Garcia across 8.0 innings.
The bullpen followed strong after Garcia, as junior Richard Tamsett (Canajoharie, NY/Canajoharie/HVCC), sophomore Asa Dugan (Morris, NY/Morris Central), and sophomore pitcher Zeb Whitcavich (Fultonville, NY/Fonda-Fultonville) combined for two shutout innings in the victory.
Joseph Karpierz (Latham, NY/Shaker/Xavier), the conference's leader in batting average, drove in five runs on three hits, three of which came on a big fly in the bottom of the seventh inning that enacted the run rule to secure the weekend sweep over Alfred. The senior, who was just a triple shy of the cycle, stole three bases across the afternoon. Karpierz batted .529 (9-for-17) with nine runs scored and 13 RBI in the 4-0 week. The senior infielder, who totaled 20 bases, slugged 1.176 and registered a .600 on-base percentage.
Senior infielder Anthony Rizzo (Latham, NY/Shaker/HVCC) also had a trio of hits including a triple, and scored all three times he reached base.
Sophomore infielder Nick Chicaway (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) had two hits, as he blasted his first collegiate homer, a third inning grand slam to give the Gators a nine run advantage.
RSC, who has scored in double-digits in twelve straight games, begins an important week of action on Tuesday as they travel to Williams for a non-conference test.
