UTICA, N.Y. – Russell Sage College baseball continued Empire 8 Conference play on Wednesday evening, defeating SUNY Poly 17-3 in eight innings due to the run-rule.
The Gators (26-5/15-1 E8) scored runs in seven of the eight frames to secure their 15th conference victory of the year.
All nine starters registered hits and RBIs in the win, headlined by four knocks from Nick Irizarry (South Plainfield, NJ/South Plainfield). The freshman drove in two runs and walked twice out of the leadoff spot, scoring four times.
Senior Anthony Rizzo (Latham, NY/Shaker/HVCC) drove in four runs on a pair of singles, while junior Jayden Kennedy (East Patchogue, NY/Patchogue Medford/HVCC) delivered the biggest blow, a three-run homer to cap the scoring in the eighth inning.
Sophomore Mitch Neer (Newburgh, NY/Marlboro) was a home run away from the cycle, driving in a run and scoring twice in the effort.
Sophomores Darren Dengler (Hobart, NY/South Kortright) and Nick Chicaway (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) each drove in a pair of runs on two hits, while senior Colin Casey (Marlboro, NY/Marlboro/Saint Rose), junior Connor Griffin (Jersey Shore, PA/Jersey Shore/Lock Haven), and sophomore John Kelleher (Monroe, NY/Monroe Woodbury) all registered a hit and a run-batted-in.
Griffin got the start on the mound, producing a seven-inning performance, striking out four and picking up his third victory of the season. Freshman Paul Roesel (Sag Harbor, NY/Pierson) closed out the contest with a one-two-three inning in the bottom of the eighth.
"Connor Griffin did an excellent job of competing for us on the mound," shared Head Coach Matt Marsh. "We continued to play aggressively offensively in all aspects of baserunning, high ball in play and 2 strike hitting. We had multiple guys step up today in Darren Dengler, JJ Kelleher, Mitch Neer, Nick Chicaway and others. It was great to see Jayden Kennedy have success at the plate today. He's a great hitter and looked like himself today. Nick Irizarry and Anthony Rizzo also did a great job setting the table at the top of the order. We will work to get better tomorrow at practice and prepare for this weekend."
RSC returns to the diamond this weekend for a three-game set with St. John Fisher.
